Transport stories: Inspiring an increase in women at Jersey's public bus service

As part of the 20th anniversary of Women in Transport, ALBUM celebrates some of the inspiring women working in the UK bus network today.

Helena’s journey at LibertyBus – Jersey's public bus service – started back in 2017 as a trainee driver. It was here Helena saw firsthand the importance of the transport industry in wider society.

Through transporting people from every walk of life, Helena learned to appreciate that we do much more than just transport from A to B. We connect communities, cultures and people every single day.

It was this appreciation for connection and people that led Helena to become one of our Mental Health First Aiders, ready to lend a helping hand with her kind and caring nature.

After seven years of honing her craft out on service, Helena wanted to see what was under the hood, so she swapped calling at stops for calling the shots as a relief controller at the station. Here, Helena began to see the operation from a bird’s eye view, picking up the organisational skills vital for such roles. Helena has shone in her first year in the control room, with her eyes firmly set on becoming a permanent fixture in our operations team.

We’ve been so inspired by Helena’s journey that we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving to be the face of our recruitment campaigns. Through this, we’ve been able to spread the word that women do belong in transport. As a result, we’ve seen a consistent increase in women joining us, taking up a variety of roles across the business. Helena is proof that not only can women work in transport, but that they can thrive.
